First Communion Outfit Complete for Under $30

April 4th, 2007 at 05:14 pm

We are a Catholic family and First Communion is a big deal for us.

DD9 made hers last year - she is my practical girl who doesn't give much thought to her appearance. We got her dress on sale the year prior for $21 and she wore nylons ($1.00 at Walmart) and shoes she already had. Biggest cost was $22.00 for veil.

Well, DD8 is my fashionista glitter girl. She got a gown (far grander than DD9) last year - $112 SRP that I paid $23.99 for. A trip to Meijers got her a pair of over-the-top lacy anklets (clearance $1). She didn't want a veil, so I got her a wreath of flowers with ribbon (flower girl style) for $4.50 (used 40% off Michael's coupons). She has white glitter shoes. So all in all, not bad. She looks like she cost a lot more than that.

I share this because I overheard a conversation between two mothers. One has twins and opted for a Trunk Show at Von Maur's (upscale dept store in midwest) and paid ONLY $900.00 for both ensembles (apparently sweater capes where purchased to go with the sleeveless dresses). OH MY ...

I sealed YD beautiful dress from Polly Flinders, (smocking in the front with tiny pink flowers) in our Food Sealer so hopefully my granddaughters can wear it. She had dripped chocolate ice cream down it and it sat in her closet for like 5 years (yes I am pathetic I know). It all came clean after soaking overnight in Oxyclean. That's when I sealed it!

    Enjoy the day!

Thanks for the feedback. I sometimes think we would go broke if I tried to keep up with the Joneses! In my maturity I'm moving toward "I am glad" rather than nine years ago when I was embarrassed that I shopped at Once Upon a Child. And I LOVE the idea of sealing the dresses once they're used. My Communion dress was a rather sad yellow looking lacy thing that cost something like $12 at Sears 25+ years ago. My mom thought it looked awful and threw it out just recently.

When I see those twins in their $450 outfits, I'll be saying to myself "That is three months of college prepaid tuition payments, one quarter of a year's payments, etc ..."

The $8.00 dress, white dotted swiss with simple collar has outfitted my four girls and five grand daughters over the span of many years. Now the veil is a different story, we had two of those, which gave a choice. I must say it was endearing to have the childen all wear the same dress, tradition. May you and your family enjoy the blessings of this special day.

My daughter is 10 and just made her first holy communion may 5th.I got her poofy communion dress and veil at a thrift store for 20 bucks and found her white tights and shoes at a garage sale for 3 bucks.the only things she had new were the required rubber pants and under shirt under the dress.i had to shell out 12.95 for the pair of white, youth size rubber pants and 5 bucks for the new under shirt.I told her that since i had to pay almost 13 bucks for the rubber pants, that i was going to put them in her drawer and that she is going to wear them for other special occasions with the white tights over them.she said ok and will wear them for her neices wedding in july.

The first communion outfit is medium range for the attraction of the people. The quality of the communion and assignmentgeek is charged for the humans. The mode is instilled for the communion in different colors and shades for the people.
